Acronis True Image 2013

It is recommended to clone the disks from Acronis Bootable Media

This article applies to:

Acronis True Image is a local or cloud backup that saves your entire system, single files and can bring you back in time. We have been registered users of Acronis for over at least ten years. Our favorite Acronis True Image function is creating and using a system image, enabling personalized computer restoration at any time. True Image 2013 records ongoing changes as you work, so you can revisit any file, folder or your entire system as it was at a specific point in time. Windows 8 Hand in hand with the latest developments, True Image 2013 is compatible with Windows 8. And it still supports all Windows operating systems back to XP.

Using True Image 2013 you can clone basic MBR disks.

(!) True Image 2013 does not allow to clone a single partition, only cloning of an entire disk is possible.

Source disk volumes can be cloned to the target disk 'as is' or resized proportionally.

It is recommended not to format the source hard disk after the cloning until you are sure that the cloned target disk boots fine.

It is possible to clone a larger disk to a smaller one, provided that the smaller hard disk has enough capacity to fit the contents of the larger disk.

(!) Only basic disks can be cloned with True Image 2013.

(!) If you clone a disk with Windows to external USB hard drive, you will not be able to boot from it. Windows does not support booting from external USB hard drives. Please clone to internal SATA SSD or HDD instead.

You can use Windows Disk Management to see if you have basic or dynamic disks:

  • Hit Start-Run and type in diskmgmt.msc
  • If it shows Basic, then you can do the cloning:
  • If it shows Dynamic, then cloning is not possible:

(!) True Image 2013Plus Pack does not allow to clone dynamic disks as well. As a workaround, you can create a backup of the source dynamic disk and restore it to the new disk using True Image 2013 Plus Pack.

If you are going to do system disk cloning, it recommended to do it from Acronis Bootable Media.

Cloning from Acronis Bootable Media
  1. Create Acronis Bootable Media. See ;
  2. Boot your computer from Acronis Bootable Media and select Tools&Utilities -> Clone disk:
  3. Select the Automatic mode to have your old disk's partitions automatically and proportionally resized to fit the new disk:
  4. Select your old hard disk as the source disk and click Next:
  5. Select the new hard disk as the destination disk and click Next:
  6. If the destination disk is partitioned, click OK to allow the product to erase all data from the destination disk (required to do the cloning):
  7. Review the operation on the Summary window and click Proceed to start the cloning:
  8. When the cloning completes, shut down the system and remove one of the hard drives.

  6. Review the operation on the Summary window and click Proceed to start the cloning:
  7. If you are cloning a disk with currently active operating system, the program will ask for a reboot. Press Reboot to continue cloning:

(!) If you press Cancel, the operation will be aborted.

  8. When the cloning completes, you will be offered to press any key to shut down the computer. Shut down the system and remove one of the hard drives:

Every time I log on to true image I get an error message at the bottom of the screen saying The hardware ID has changed, with the option of change serial number or activate now, I click activate now and it says the activation was successful, this is fine until the next time I log on, and it appears again, every day

Is there a simple fix ?

Hi Patrick,

Logging into windows, or logging into the Acronis software?

Technically, you don't 'log in' to Acronis for it to run. However, if you are referring to one of its subscription based features such as online storage or cloud, then maybe you would be prompted to log in.

Was your install a full version, trial or upgrade? Was the install moved to a new computer? Maybe this is related. I'm just not clear what you mean after reading your description.

Activation errors can usually be resolved using the activation wizard, which you are normally propmpted to use after initial install. Other factors can affect this such as, migrating to a new machine, performing a upgrade from one version to another or if you subscribed or 'tried' the cloud based storage feature at one time, but allowed it to lapse.

You can either tell us more about the issue, or, you may want to start over by uninstalling the software, and running the clean up utility, then reinstall and activate. Up to you, let us know how you'd like to proceed.

Patrick, from looking at other reports of similar problems with 'hardware id has changed' the advice has been to perform a repair install of the product which has resolved the issue.

To do a repair install, just reinstall the ATIH 2013 installation program and take the option to Repair when offered. If you don't have a copy of the 2013 installer, you can sign in to your Acronis Account (click on My Account) and provided you have registered the software to that account, you can re-download the product installer again.

Acronis True Image 2013

Sorry, didnt explain it properly, I bought the original 2007 ATI and updated in 2011 and updated again only three months ago to the 2013 as it was on offer, all the updates were to this machine, what I meant by logging in, was every time I start the Acronis True Image program I see the message at the bottom appear that informs me of a Harware change etc, so I reactive and everything is fine till the next time I start the program.

I have gone back into my account and downloaded it again and clicked the repair installation, I had the 2007, 2011, 2013 versions all registerd to my account

I have been through the repair process and ensured everything was updated, created a new bootable media, and then closed the program and restarted it, but again the error message of Hardware ID change, either reactive or enter new serial number has come up ?

I have tried to get support from Acronis, but this must be the worst site in the world to get a simple request actioned, hence my try on the forum, and thank you both for your responses, I was thinking of updating to 2016, but I think I will look at other back up programs, I only use it for a single computer, but having suffered a crash many years ago and the windows back up not functioning, I dont want to be without a back up program.

Any suggestions to help fix this, or recommendations on other comparable back up programs would be much appreciated?

Thanks Pat

Patrick have you tried uninstalling TI 2013 using the cleanup tool and then reinstalling?

Acronis True Image Free Edition

No, I just tried the repair installation and reinstalled it, I suppose if nothing else, I could remove and reinstall, I just didn't want to have to go through the set up procedure again, but if no other option left I would have to do this, just a shame Acronis hides away access to its support which may already have come across this, hence plan B, remove TI and install something more reliable ?

Hello Patrick,

I've sent you a PM to discuss the situation. As I stated, the activation issues (with all Acronis True Image versions) are supported without any limitations.

Thank you,
