Acronis[4]True Image is a software product produced by Acronis that provides data protection for personal users including, backup, archive, access and recovery for Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android operating systems.[4] As disk imaging software, True Image can restore the previously captured image to another disk, replicating the structure and contents to the new disk, also allowing disk cloning and partition resizing, even if the new disk is of a different capacity. The backups are in a proprietary format which saves using a .tib filename format.[5] Acronis was launched in 2003 and in December 2014 claimed to have over 5 million consumer and 500,000 businesses users.[6]

  • SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland-(BUSINESS WIRE)-Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection, today announced an update of Acronis True Image 2021 that incorporates a professional-grade vulnerability.

Apr 15, 2021 Acronis True Image is designed for home usage. It offers backup and recovery of PCs, Mac and mobile devices. If your objective is to protect your home computer from hardware or software crashes by backing it up, you will be better off with Acronis True Image. Acronis Cyber Backup is designed for small business environment. Acronis began in 2003 as a maker of local-backup and disc-imaging software and quickly earned a good reputation. The company still offers this offline solution, called Acronis True Image Standard. Acronis True Image 2017 for 1 Device #1 Backup Software ( Windows, Mac, Mobile) 4.5 out of 5 stars (20) 20 product ratings - Acronis True Image 2017 for 1 Device #1 Backup Software (.

Overview[edit]

Editions[edit]

Several editions of Acronis True Image are available. Acronis True Image Cloud is a subscription-based software plus service offering that allows both local and online backup with unlimited cloud backup, and offers backup for a selection of mobile phones and tablets.[7] Successive versions of Acronis True Image are the local backup editions. Both editions are available at retail outlets.[8]

Until release 9 there were versions of Acronis True Image for personal and business users, with business versions named Acronis True Image Server.[9] Later server backup software was renamed 'Acronis Backup'.[10]

Operation[edit]

Acronis True Image can make two types of backups: file backup, backing up user-specified files and directories, and full system images, which are exact snapshots of an entire disk partition. The program can back up a system hard drive while the OS is running. Acronis True Image can browse the contents of backups and restore them partially or entirely. It can also mount a disk backup as a virtual disk, readable in the same way as any disk drive.

Although backups can be restored when the system is running, a major purpose of backup is to restore the system when it fails to start. Acronis True Image can install Acronis Startup Recovery Manager (ASRM), a computer program that helps restore backups at boot time. Acronis True Image can also create a copy of Acronis Rescue Media, a bootable DVD that contains a copy of Acronis True Image and can restore backups to a computer not bootable in the normal way, so long as a good boot drive (existing or new) is available.

The Acronis True Image Cloud version allows cloud users to also back up their mobile devices. iPhone and Android smartphones are supported, in addition to iPad and Windows tablets. This edition also brings back the 'Try and Decide' option which lets users perform potentially risky actions such as the installation of un-trusted software with the option of returning to the system function before the action if any problems occur.[11]

Acronis True Image Cloud allows multiple devices to be backed up, managed and archived on the Acronis Cloud from the online dashboard.[12]

One complaint from Acronis users is the inability to disable taskbar popups marketing upgrades and new products from the developer. [13] The notification will grab focus (ie. will interrupt a full screen game or movie) and each advertisement must be disabled individually. The company currently offers no way to permanently turn off these advertisements. [14]

Supported file systems[edit]

Acronis True Image supports multiple file systems including NTFS, FAT32, ext2, ext3, ext4, HFS+, APFS, ReiserFS, and Linux Swap.[15]

In addition to backing up supported file systems, Acronis True Image provides raw sector backup and restore options independent of file system, thereby supporting a file system that is corrupt, or not supported. This creates a complete image of all sectors on the partition, whether they contain data or not; the image will not be compressed, and will be the same size as the partition.[16]

History[edit]

Acronis began in 2001 as a division of SWsoft[6] and in 2003 became a separate company and continued to release the Acronis True Image software. The True Image name was applied to all platforms from Home to Corporate until 2010, when Acronis business backup software was renamed, with True Image being the home version.[17]

File format[edit]

Acronis True Image guarantees backward compatibility for image files (with the .tib extension) created with a single previous version, that is, images created with an immediate previous version can be successfully restored (older versions may or may not work). Backups are created to be compatible between different editions of Acronis True Image within the same version (Home, Enterprise), e.g., between former Acronis True Image Echo Workstation and Acronis True Image Echo Enterprise Server, or between Linux and Windows versions.[21] Compatibility is not guaranteed between products that are not within the same version.[22] Guaranteed cross-version compatibility is documented.[17]

In some cases it is possible to extract the .tib file using free offzip utility with commandline 'offzip.exe -R -o -a -1 -z 15 <.tib> <.bin>', which produces uncompressed binary image. The command scans all TIB compressed sections and extracts them into one image file.

Format conversion[edit]

VMware Converter by virtualization company VMware supports converting .tib files created by former Acronis True Image Echo 9.1 and 9.5, and Acronis True Image Home 10 and 11 into a virtual machine.[23][24] However, after VMware Converter failed to recognize Acronis True Image 2013 .tibs, VMware said 'unfortunately VMware Converter doesn't support current Acronis True Image versions'.[25]

Acronis True Image has an option to convert backups between its proprietary .tib and Microsoft's VHD backup format,[26] more widely supported, and documented under the Microsoft Open Specification Promise.

Partnerships[edit]

Acronis True Image Business

Acronis has licensed custom versions of Acronis True Image to some hard disk manufacturers, including Western Digital's Acronis True Image WD Edition,[27]Intel Data Migration Software to migrate from an existing hard drive to an Intel SSD,[28] and Seagate DiscWizard.[29] Such editions are free to download and use, but only with that manufacturer's hard drives.

SCHAFFHAUSEN, Switzerland--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Acronis, a global leader in cyber protection, today announced the release of Acronis True Image 2021. The new release integrates advanced cybersecurity capabilities with the best-of-breed personal backup to create the first complete personal cyber protection solution for home users, prosumers, and small businesses around the world.

Incorporating cybersecurity capabilities such as real-time antimalware protection, on-demand antivirus scans, web filtering, and videoconference protection into Acronis True Image ensures users have complete cyber protection. For individuals and small business users, unifying these vital capabilities in one solution makes their protection easier to manage and more affordable, while greatly improving the security of their data and devices.

Delivery of this comprehensive solution comes as the COVID-19 pandemic exposes gaps in traditional solutions and strategies. Securing home machines has never been more important, yet a recent Acronis survey found nearly half (47%) of remote workers never received clear guidance on working from home.

“As more people work or attend classes from home, the FBI documents a 400% increase in cyberattacks because hackers know home systems are not usually as well-defended as an office,” said Serguei “SB” Beloussov, founder and CEO of Acronis. “Backup without cybersecurity is an incomplete option in that situation, as is cybersecurity without backup. Acronis True Image 2021 delivers the easy, efficient, and secure cyber protection needed today.”

By integrating the company’s VB100-certified antimalware technology into its award-winning personal backup software, Acronis can uniquely offer one solution that tackles the complete range of modern data loss threats.

Standalone backup and cybersecurity are obsolete

With the modern reliance on everyday devices like computers, smartphones, and tablets, the data they contain has an inherent value. Cybercriminals are constantly evolving their attacks to reach that data, which is why security research firms such as AV-Test report more than 350,000 new malware threats every day.

Since backup software and files are often the targets of these new attacks to prevent recovery, backup alone no longer provides suitable protection for users. Similarly, conventional cybersecurity solutions do not provide the data protection and recovery capabilities users need following an attack.

Relying on multiple products that were not designed to work together creates security gaps, is more complex to manage, and is more costly.

As a single, integrated solution, Acronis True Image 2021 closes those gaps, making protection and security more effective, easier to manage, and more affordable. Users have authentic, unaltered data that’s free of malware for safe recoveries. They can proactively stop any malware attack and then quickly restore affected files. The single, intuitive interface reduces the complexity of managing their security and backups.

“With remote learning being the new normal, students and faculty are increasingly looking for cyber protection and backup solutions for their home computers. In doing so, they help protect themselves and others logging onto school networks. Acronis True Image comes highly recommended as it provides the highest level of cyber protection and is also very easy and convenient to use,” said Florian Oelck, Director of Business Development at Kivuto.

Integration delivers superior cyber protection

For the last few years, Acronis True Image has been the only personal backup solution with a built-in antiransomware that stops attacks in real-time, while automatically restoring any affected files.

With the launch of Acronis True Image 2021, those capabilities are expanded with the addition of the company’s advanced antimalware technology, which is currently deployed in Acronis Cyber Protect Cloud. This next-gen, full-stack antimalware has been shown by independent security labs such as Virus Bulletin and AV-Test to return a 100% detection rate with zero false-positives.

As a result, home users gain advanced capabilities with Acronis True Image 2021, including:

  • Real-time protection, driven by AI-enhanced behavioral heuristics, which stops all malware – including zero-day attacks by never-before-seen threats
  • On-demand antivirus scans of the full system or quick scans of at-risk files, either of which can be scheduled in advance or run instantly
  • Web filtering that automatically blocks Windows users from accessing malicious websites that harbor malware, disinformation, scams, and phishing attacks
  • Videoconference protection prevent hackers and malware injection attacks from exploiting popular apps like Zoom, Cisco Webex, and Microsoft Teams
  • Comprehensive detection, with both behavioral analysis and signature-based analysis engines

These advanced antimalware capabilities are included with Advanced and Premium licenses, and offered as a three-month trial with Standard and Essential licenses.

Acronis True Image 2021 gives individuals and small businesses access to the same protection technologies relied on by global companies and top teams in the world’s most high-pressure professional sports.

“Cyber protection is a top priority for Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing,” explains Bobby Rahal, co-owner of Rahal Letterman Lanigan Racing. “For the past two years, we have relied on Acronis to protect our data and workloads with the latest cyber protection solutions. When our races were on pause, Acronis continued to provide protection for our team working remotely. Now, with Acronis True Image, everyone can safeguard their personal data against the worst-case scenario.”

Reliable as ever

The expansion of the built-in antimalware does not come at the expense of Acronis True Image’s backup capabilities, since risks such as disk failures, accidental deletions, and lost or stolen devices continue.

The new release features several enhancements, including:

  • Resumable replication of backups. If a disconnection happens while data is being replicated in the cloud, the process resumes from the point of the interruption to avoid duplicating of previously replicated data.
  • Quicker backup validation. Users can now choose to validate the latest version for their backup only, which significantly speeds up the standard process for validating the effectiveness of backups.
  • Greater VM options. Users now have the ability for .tibx archives to be mounted, moved, renamed, and converted to the .vhd format – enabling them to be run as virtual machines.
Acronis

“Acronis True Image provides best in class cyber protection and backup to everyone from home users to small business owners. We are excited for the exceptional integration with OWC technology, its ease of use, and the benefits every OWC customer can appreciate,” said Larry O’Connor, CEO of OWC. “It is the only personal backup solution that utilizes AI to stop ransomware and cryptojacking in real-time. Everyone needs this…before they need it.”
