Utc Time Zone Location

Posted on by admin

When converting a zone time to or from UTC, dates must be properly taken into account. For example, 10 March at 02:00 UTC (2:00 a.m.) is the same as March 9 at 9:00 p.m. Time zones in the USA are defined in the U.S. Code, Title 15, Chapter 6, Subchapter IX - Standard Time. The time zones in the law are defined by their offset from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC). There are 9 official time zones according to the law. In addition the uninhabited atolls of Baker Island (AoE) and Wake Island (WAKT) add to the time zone count, making 11 the total number of time zones in the US. Almost all states in the US use Daylight Saving Time (DST). UTC-06:00 Central Time Zone, the largest one by area, encompasses 20 states, but only 10 of them are located entirely within zone's boundaries, all remaining states have some exceptions. UTC-07:00 Mountain Time Zone includes 14 states, only 6 of them are wholly in this zone, all the others use the Mountain Time in some parts of their territories. Parts of Australia, Chatham Islands, Fiji, Lord Howe Island, New Zealand and Samoa do use Daylight Saving Time. Twelve different time zones are observed in this region ranging from UTC/GMT - 9:00 to UTC/GMTGMT + 14. Several countries and island nations use time zones that are offset from UTC/GMT by partial hours. UTC to MET: Middle European Time Same zone as CET: UTC to WAT: West Africa Time: UTC to WEDT: Western European Daylight Time: UTC to WEST: Western European Summer Time: UTC to CAT: Central Africa Time: UTC to CEDT: Central European Daylight Time: UTC to CEST: Central European Summer Time: UTC to EET: Eastern European Time: UTC to HAEC.

What is UTC or GMT Time?

Weather observations around the world (including surface, radar, and other observations) are always taken with respect to a standard time. By convention, the world's weather communities use a twenty four hour clock, similar to 'military' time based on the 0° longitude meridian, also known as the Greenwich meridian.

Prior to 1972, this time was called Greenwich Mean Time (GMT) but is now referred to as Coordinated Universal Time orUniversal Time Coordinated (UTC). It is a coordinated time scale, maintained by the Bureau International des Poids etMesures (BIPM). It is also known as 'Z time' or 'Zulu Time'.

To obtain your local time here in the United States, you need to subtract a certain number of hours from UTC dependingon how many time zones you are away from Greenwich (England). The table below shows the standard difference from UTC time to local time.

The switch to daylight saving time does not affect UTC. It refers to time on the zero or Greenwich meridian, which is notadjusted to reflect changes either to or from Daylight Saving Time.

However, you need to know what happens during daylight saving time in the United States. In short, the local time is advanced one hour during daylight saving time. As an example, the Eastern Time zone difference from UTC is -4 hours during daylight saving time rather than -5 hours as it is during standard time.

15 Degrees Longitude

One time zone is 15 degrees longitude and there are 24 of them. A full circle, 360 degrees, divided by 24 as the number of hours in a day results 15 degrees. The time difference between two time zones next to each other in the 24 hour system is one hour.
A few countries do not follow a time zone according to their physical location. They may have chosen another time zone that is more purposeful related to their current politics, business partners or just for the ease of use. One of the 'ease of use' examples is China which follows one time zone in a land area that crosses five time zones.

40 Time Zones

Altogether there are 40 time zones that are offsets from Coordinated Universal Time (UTC) by a whole number of hours from UTC-12 to UTC+14 or which are offsets of 30 or 45 minutes. Some countries use daylight saving time (DST) during the summer months to move the first light hour from the morning to the afternoon. This method saves energy by reducing the need for artificial lighting and increases a possibility for outdoor activities in the afternoons since the sun sets an hour later.
